Brown Sugar Old-Fashioned

While I enjoy the taste of cherries and oranges, I always hated the cloudy look and mouthfeel of a muddled old-fashioned. They just look and taste awful, especially if using maraschino cherries. So, I created this old fashion to help me to get the same depth of flavor without needing all the downsides. This was actually talked about as the best old-fashioned in town.

My recipe is made with bourbon, Lazzaroni Maraschino liqueur, a brown sugar or demerara syrup, orange and angostura, and a flamed orange peel. You can also smoke your glass, for another dimension of flavor if you are so inclined. It’s a great addition to the flavor profile of the drink.

Brown Sugar Old-Fashioned

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz of a decent bourbon such as Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Jefferson’s, Woodford, etc. Evan William’s Bottled in Bond is another great and underrated option for this.

  • 2 dashes angostura bitters

  • 2 dashes of orange bitters (preferably Fee Brother’s)

  • .5 oz brown sugar syrup or demerara syrup

  • orange peel and matches

Instructions

  • In a mixing glass, combine bourbon, maraschino liqueur, bitters, and syrup

  • Add ice and stir for 30-40 revolutions

  • strain over a large rock in a rocks glass

  • Express an orange peel through the flame of a match in to the drink

  • Rim the glass with the orange peel and drop in to the drink.

  • Enjoy!
